Ballon d'Or 2018 Announced, Has the Award Lost It's Credibility?

Ballon d'Or 2018 | Image Source: Poschimbongo

The Domination Over Ballon d'Or of The Football's Greatest Duo Ends as Croatian Wizard Luka Modric Claims The Title

As it happened in the FIFA awards, the Croatian wizard Luka Modric breaks the decade lasting domination of the Football's Greatest duo play over the Ballon d'Or award of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. There were rumors, that a Frenchmen was going to claim the award this term but the Croatian wizard Luka Modric has won the Ballon d'Or 2018 trophy. He had reasons to compete for the title but was he really the best player in the world? Let's discuss.

Has Ballon d'Or losing its credibility?

Luka Modric who has won the UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid for the third straight time and had a wonderful World Cup this summer where he helped his nation to reach the finals of the World Cup, has won both the FIFA best player and Ballon d'Or 2018 award.

But was he the best player of the last season or was it media propaganda that only forwards can win these individual trophies? If it was propaganda then the example of Luka Modric can be seriously questioned over these trophies. Okay, it's a World Cup year too, so let's get back to World Cup year examples:

EXAMPLE 1, Ballon d'Or 2014:

2014 was a World Cup year like 2018, and the Ballon d'Or winner was Cristiano Ronaldo and he had a bad campaign at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where Portugal did not qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup campaign. So, in this case, the World Cup performance of Cristiano Ronaldo didn't count.

All thought he had a terrific campaign in the Champions League 2013-2014 and with his club Real Madrid, he also had won the Copa Del Ray. He scored a staggering 51 goals in that season and over the calendar year most of the time he was consistent and that is what it should be " a Ballon d'Or winner should be consistent". But in Modric's case from the 2018-2019 season, his performance rate gone only downwards. He is definitely not the best player in the world.

Talking about one or two propaganda that helped Luka Modric to win both the award can be like this:
  • why always a Ballon d'Or winner has to be a forward.
  • In World Cup year the World Cup performances should count.
  • Or the third option can be the media people needed a change as the award has been won by Messi and Ronaldo for the last 10 years.

EXAMPLE 2, Ballon d'Or 2010:

Our second example goes back to the year 2010 where it was the Argentine superstar Lionel Messi won the prestigious trophy. Where he had an ordinary World Cup under the superstar coach Diego Maradona but in that calendar year Lionel Messi scored staggering 53 goals in that calendar year. In this case, Lionel Messi also was consistent throughout the calendar year and in his case, we all know that Lionel Messi's football is more than only scoring goals. He had consistency in his performances and he won it.

Now let's come to the main topic in 2010 the Champions League winner was Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan where Wesley Sneijder was one of the protagonists of that special campaign. The attacking midfielder from the Netherlands had a wonderful 2010 World Cup too and he helped his team to reach the finals of the campaign like Luka Modric did with his nation Croatia. Sneijder scored 5 goals and assisted one time in the World Cup 2010 but strangely he wasn't even there in the Ballon d'Or podium. Here the performances in the Champions League and World Cup didn't help Sneijder for these individual awards.

There are more examples available but it does not really matter. But the question still remains ''Has these individual awards lost its credibility?"

WHERE DO MESSI AND RONALDO FINISHES IN THIS TROPHY RANKING:

 Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo: The goal machine from Portugal had an amazing year individually for club and country in this calendar year. He has scored 44 goals and assisted 12 times in only 46 appearances in this calendar year. That is the stat that many of World Class strikers can only dream of. He along with his arch-rival Lionel Messi has gone past the level of world-class five years back. After having a wonderful season individually Cristiano Ronaldo was voted to the second spot at the Ballon d'Or 2018.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi: The Argentine talisman had an impressive campaign personally. He took a Neymar less struggling Barcelona to a double-winning season and the contribution he had throughout the whole year was something really special. Lionel Messi was voted the fifth-best player at this Ballon d'Or 2018 and the fifth-best player according to this award had quite remarkable stats to look at. Lionel Messi scored 45 goals and assisted 23 times in 50 appearances in the calendar year 2018. He is the European Golden Boot winner. Yes, the thing that backfired to get him the votes was the misery at this World Cup but was it only was Messi's fault?

Conclusion: We have mentioned our point but now it is the time for the people to decide how much this Ballon d'Or was related to the best player in the world.

Just Only Pele Stands Before Messi Now As Messi Goes Past Gerd Muller For This World Record

PELE AND MESSI

MESSI HAS JUST PELE IN FRONT OF HIM AS HIS DOUBLE VS BETIS CLOSES HIM ON A STUNNING RECORD

WHAT IS THE STORY?

Lionel Messi scored a double against Real Betis on this weekend which takes him  to the second spot after the Brazilian legend Pele for most number of goals scored for a single club. Messi goes past Gerd Muller after scoring the second goal against Real Betis on La Liga.

Leo still has some years left in his career and with goal ratio will he go past Pele?

Lets check some stats between these football wizards.

SOME STUFFS BETWEEN MESSI AND PELE;

Pele the Brazilian legend of football has played his most of the club matches for Brazilain club Santos FC. Pele has a stat that says he has scored more than one thousand goals in his career, this includes friendly matches, can also include Brazilian national team and New York Cosmos matches. However, In official matches for Santos FC Pele has scored 643 goals in 18 seasons and that is the current standing record.

The majority of the goals came from ''Campeonato Paulista'' which is the league run by the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil. But Pele also scored in Brazilian National League as well as Copa Libertadores,Intercontinental Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Meanwhile Messi on the other side is not far behind from the great Brazilian. After scoring the first goal against Real Betis Messi tied up with the German legend Gerd Muller on 565 goals and later after scoring his second he went past the German legend. With 566 goals for a single club in official matches Lionel Messi is just behind Pele by 77 goals.

Messi's average goals in a calendar year for FC Barcelona is 47 goals in last three years.
If we take that stat into the action Pele's record should be broken in two years of time. And very few people will doubt that.

CONCLUSION:

Frankly we don't believe in comparing greatest sporting personalities but in a competitive sport there will be comparisons here and there.

Pele played the sport when there was no offside rule was mentioned in rule books. With 1000 and more goals in Pele's career there are so many things that we can say about today's football and football played in between that time.

With generation, football also has changed and improved over the time.

Ballon d'Or 2018 Ranking; November,Who Will Win It?

BALLON D'OR 2018

Ballon d'Or 2018 Ranking; November,Who Will Win It?

The wait for this prestigious trophy is almost at it's climax. The debates, arguments, the little fights between football fans is going to be over for this trophy edition of 2018. There were lots of special performances happened this year. This is year that will be remembered by the football fans as they saw how has football changed and the dominance of footballing powerhouses are shifting all over the World. The little teams are surprising bigger guns as we saw at the world cup.

As this trophy is an individual award, France Football Magazine gave a list of 30 players back on october 8, who are the contenders for Ballon d'Or 2018.You can see the full list right under.

Last 10 years of this trophy has been shared by two of the games all time greats Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. No surprise they are the real contenders this year too.But in this year of World Cup there were special performance of other players  too. So,there will be healthy competition and debate about who is going to lift the award this year.

SEE THE TOP 5 FIVE PLAYERS WHO ARE AT THE TOP

#NUMBER 5:    Eden Hazard
EDEN HAZARD

Eden Hazard is on 5th position on our list. He has continued his good form since the World Cup till now.

The team Chelsea have struggled from January to the last season ending under Antonio Conte. But the new coach  Maurizio Sarri's playing system suits the Belgium attacker perfectly and after an impressive display from him at the world cup Hazard had no problems to show his attacking qualities for Chelsea also.

At the summer there were talks about he is going to be the replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo at Madrid but somehow it did't happened. But you take experts comment he has a great opportunity if he joins Real Madrid in coming two transfer windows because Cristiano Ronaldo's left a huge shoes to fill at real Madrid.

NUMBER 4:     Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe

In our number 4th position we have the wonder kid from France. Kylian Mbappe is one of the most hot topics in world football and why not his footballing skills speaks for his talents.
No doubt he has got the potential to be the best player in the world.

His achievements at his can make any footballer proud. His has made a huge contribution to his world cup winning team and he was one of the best players of 2018 world cup. In 7 appearances at the world cup he scored 4 goals for France. He also made a great start in his club season this term. In this season for for PSG in 17 appearances he has scored 17 goals and assisted 6 times. In a match against Lyon in Ligue 1 he scored 4 goals, terrifying it is.

NUMBER 3:            LUKA MODRIC

LUKA MODRIC

In number 3 in our rankings we have the Croatian maestro Luka Modric. He had a wonderful year with his club and country and received almost all the individual awards this year. But his consistency in recent months are in deep scrutiny.

He has won the UEFA Champions League title for the third straight time with Real Madrid and helped his national team to reach the  World Cup finals. On both those occasions he had a very major role to play, and he did part with his world class display.

But in this season he and his club Real Madrid are really struggling. The performance of Luka Modric has been decreased over the past few months. That is why the FIFA player of the year is not topping our list.

NUMBER 2:                 Lionel Messi

LIONEL MESSI

In number 2 in our rankings we have Lionel Messi who is already won this prestigious trophy 5 times. He is the best in many eyes for this season too and they have their strong debates and we respect that. Actually for us it was very tuff decision that who is going to be number 1 in our rankings. When we are giving Messi the second spot we should explain about the reasons, so lets check out some stats about Messi's last year.

Lionel Messi may not have won the World Cup or Champions League but individually he was on different level from others. When Neymar left for PSG at the 2017 summer transfer window,Barcelona were looking like team that would struggle to compete for the La Liga too as their display was so poor in Spanish Super Cup both leg matches against Real Madrid at the start of the last season.

But Lionel Messi stood up for the struggling Barcelona. With off form Luis Suarez it was getting harder with each day but for Barcelona Lionel Messi was their to decide matches.
Luis Suarez came back in form during month of January but Lionel Messi was the man behind the Barcelona's domestic double success. For any other them it would have been a great season but with Barcelona and their talisman the standard are pretty high.

Barcelona just lost one La Liga match in 2017-2018 La Liga campaign and for that match Messi was rested,So you can imagine what he brings to the game.

With Lionel Messi the football package is different,he is a complete player. He scores, gives assists, his dribbles but the game play and the vision he had throughout year in football pitch is nowhere comparable to any other footballer.

He scored a hatrick to send his beloved Argentina to play the Russia World Cup. But practically with that team Maradona would have struggled too. The team got never settled before going to the World Cup. I think the fans who expected Messi to win it for them, they were very ambitious as the team was never good enough.

And finally with Argentina Messi had a disappointing World Cup. We know Ballon d'Or is an individual trophy but you can not ignore event like FIFA World Cup. That is the only reason he is our second choice for this edition of Ballon d'Or.

NUMBER 1:           Cristiano Ronaldo
CRISTIANO RONALDO

For us untill the month of October Cristiano Ronaldo is the top candidate to clinch the Ballon d'Or for the sixth time in his career. Last season he won the UEFA Champions League and he was the top scorer in that tournament too. Apart from that he had a decent World Cup as far as his individual contribution.

Lionel Messi may have some individual great performances but Cristiano Ronaldo comes up with different package to football. His Champions League performances stood him apart from any footballers in the World.

Ronaldo had a impressive World Cup individually. His hatrick against Spain showed his class.

We told you it is very hard to split between Messi and Ronaldo. But for this edition Ronaldo just have edge from his Ballon d'or duoplay partner Lionel Messi.

Finally in our rankings Ronaldo is the top choice for this Ballon d'Or 2018.

RONALDO HITS A STUNNER BUT MANCHESTER UNITED COMES BACK LATE

Juventus hosted Manchester United in their UEFA Champions League group H battle.Jose Mourinho's boys were really looked better as the season progress and at Allianz Arena they were up with their task.

The game tactically well played by both the managers and it was looking like the game was going nowhere. But the all time leading Champions League goal scorer Cristiano Roanldo had different ideas.

On minute 65 Bonucci played a ball over the top from near the halfway line, and Ronaldo peeled off his marker and smashed it beyond David de Gea on the volly. An outstanding strike.

The game was going one way with that lead of Juventus but on the 86th Minute United got a free kick just outside the penalty box of Juventus. Dead ball specialist Juan Mata's wonderful effort did't went in vain and he gave a life line to Manchester United.

Manchester United who was capable of making comebacks regularly under Sir Alex Ferguson's management. Beating Juventus on their home turf is some ask when you are a goal behind after 86 minutes.

On minute 90 United got a chance to put the ball in box from a Ashely Young free kick.
Fellaini did not make contact with Ashley Young's delivery, but his presence alone was enough to cause panic in the Juventus box. The 30-year-old occupied three defenders, including Giorgio Chiellini, and his jump ensured Szczesny was unsighted, allowing a combination of Paul Pogba and Chris Smalling to help force the ball over the line via Leonardo Bonucci. And juventus gave away a own goal.

With this win now United gave themselves a real opportunity to make it for the competition knock outs.

REAL MADRID BAGS A FIVE STAR PERFORMANCE

After all the terrible things that happened with the Madrid White side since the start of the season finally things are going on the right direction for them.

Benzema opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he beat two defenders before slipping a shot through the legs of Plzen goalkeeper Ales Hruska to claim his 200th goal for Real.

Casemiro doubled the lead three minutes later when the Brazilian outjumped his marker and headed home from a corner.

An unmarked Benzema notched his second goal in the 37th minute with a redirected header assisted by Gareth Bale to give Real a 3-0 lead and Benzema returned the favour minutes later when he flicked on a cross for Bale to sweep home a volley.
Toni Kroos completed the scoring in the 67th minute when he cooly chipped over the keeper after a counter-attack involving Brazilian substitute Vinicius on his Champions League debut.

With this win Real Madrid is sharing the first spot with AS Roma as both the team got 9 points from their first 4 matchdays.

Inter Milan hosted Barcelona at San Siro in a group b clash in Champions League. It was a reverse fixture which was played at Barcelona two weeks ago. Barca won that one on their home ground 2-0.

In this fixture Barca had to share their spoils with Inter by a late Icardi equaliser on minute 87. But at first it was Malcom who gave the lead to the catalan giants on minute 83, who scored just after two minutes arriving to the park in place of Dembele.

All though Barca dominated the whole game but Inter will be very happy to get a point out of this game. Juan Bernat gave PSG a deserved lead in first-half stoppage time before Lorenzo Insigne levelled from a penalty in the 62nd minute after Jose Callejon pounced on a mistake by PSG defender Thiago Silva and was upended in the area.

RED STAR SHOCK THE WORLD AS THEY BEAT LIVERPOOL 2-0

Liverpool gets shocked by the unknown Red Star's performance in their own land. Liverpool still stays on top two of their UEFA Champions League group table. They made life harder for themselves.

Milan Pavkov hits a brace and that was enough to sink the ordinary Liverpool side.

Jurgen Klopp's verdict:

We were not surprised. If you saw the first game, it was similar – it was wild, direct, stuff like that. In Liverpool we controlled the game and tonight we didn’t. They were aggressive, very aggressive, in all parts – but they were aggressive in the last game as well, we only did better. We made life a bit too easy tonight for Belgrade, that’s the main problem. As I said, they deserved it with the passion they fought [with]. In the end you have to score goals in a game and if you think about how often we were in the box and around, that’s what you have to do in a game but you have to make the last decision in the right way and we didn’t. That’s why we lost 2-0."
